Brandt PTO Meeting Minutes 1/11

  • There were approximately 10 parents in attendance, as well as Jessica Peters, Beth Tomlinson and Lauren Brunt.
  • Follow-up Items:
Going forward, we will only address follow up items that have a status change since the last meeting.
    • Lit Life: Ms. Peters confirmed that the Lit Life personnel will do a presentation on the curriculum. We are waiting for a date and time.
      • Lit Life is primarily an approach to literacy. It is similar to Tools of the Mind (TOTM). The math and science components at the first grade level are more teacher-based, following a specific textbook set.
      • Ms. Peters was asked if there is tracking based on achievement in the district’s first grade programs. She said there is some, but it is reevaluated often.
    • Spanish: We still don’t have a start date for the new schedule or a new teacher. The group discussed approaches to moving the process along. Sarah Cavill agreed to write a letter to Ms. Vega and Mr. Rusak requesting clarification. We were told in the fall by Mr. Rusak that this issue would be resolved in 48-hours.

  • Field Trips and Assemblies:
The Board of Education (BOE) approved:
    • Carnegie Kids (1/28) – The teachers will receive a standard permission slip to give to the students a week or so prior to the trip, with a request for parent volunteers. Students must be on time or early on the 28th, so that the buses can leave on time.
    • Jersey City Museum of Art (2/10-2/12)
    • Jenkinson’s Aquarium (3/29-3/30)
    • Interpretive Center at Liberty State Park (4/21-4/23)
    • Jill Sullivan agreed to write up which classes are going on which date.
    • Magic Sky and Mad Science have not been approved for a BOE agenda. The Board is reluctant to approve programs that are not offered to the whole district. Several solutions were discussed:
      • Could we offer it during the day? There is a block of space being used for science right now, but it is not in a lab setting.
      • Could the PTO just outright pay for Magic Sky and charge parents for Mad Science? Do we need to open it up to other kindergartners in the district?
      • Does the BOE know what we are asking for? Should we reach out to them and explain that our curriculum isn’t the same as other kindergartens in the district?
      • Should we go to the press about science and Spanish and these other issues where there isn’t parity?
  • Financial update: Treasurer Kathleen Keilman gave an update on the PTO’s finances.
    • The Green Initiatives 50/50 rally brought in $925
    • As of December 31, the PTO account had $1948.
    • There has been no movement from the business office about accounts and liability.
  • Committee Updates:
    • Fundraising (Diana Whittles):
      • The wine tasting/silent auction is tentatively scheduled for March. There was discussion of feasibility due to costs, volunteer efforts, etc. Sparrow suggests tickets priced at no less than $55. The Hudson Tea community room costs $500. Would ticket sales be the money generator or would it be from wine sales and auction items? Should we open it up to the rest of the community? This is a follow-up item for February.
    • Family Fun (Sarah Cavill):
      • Movie night will be January 22nd at 6:30 in the Brandt gym. The children will pick the movie. They can wear the pjs during the day and should bring a sleeping bag to the movie. There will be a request for donations of snacks and drinks.
    • Enrichment (Rebecca Howden):
      • In-school enrichment:
        • Music: The children enjoyed the trombonist in December.
        • Phys-ed: Devotion yoga is going ahead with phys-ed enrichment this month.
        • Jane Lavascoe, author of Casey and Bella Go to New York City will be coming to Brandt to speak to the children in the spring. There will be two assemblies, 40 minutes each. This needs to be approved by Ms. Vega. The author will be distributing order forms, which need to be approved by Mr. Rusak.
        • Other ideas for enrichment possibilities include sewing, photography, and architecture.
      • Green Initiatives:
        • The enrichment committee is going to write up a succinct calendar of events with descriptions of each activity and present it to the teachers. The first activity is worms in February.
  • First Grade:
There was a discussion of the recent visit to Brandt (1/7) from Superintendent Carter. The group thinks that the presence of two board members and parents from other schools at that meeting was encouraging. Ms. Peters had heard nothing new about the possibility of first grade. However, there will most likely be an announcement about a new superintendent in March, who will begin next fall. Further steps to secure first grade include:
    • Talking to the Board members individually.
    • Encouraging parents to write their BOE members and Mr. Carter.
    • Maintaining a presence at the BOE meetings.
    • Reaching out to pre-k parents and encouraging them to speak out about their desire for first grade.
  • The next PTO meeting is February 1st, 7-9pm

  • Attendees signed in, providing all contact information. There were approximately 10 parents in attendance, as well as Jessica Peters.
  • Follow-up Items:
    • The rooftop playground: It’s up. It passed final inspection and the kids are using it.
    • 1st grade letter: Sarah is managing the petition and will work with class parents to get a petition signed. This is a follow-up item for January.
    • Bike rack: It is in limbo, because of concerns about liability issues related to children riding their bikes to school. Ms. Peters will continue to follow-up.
    • Tools of the Mind (TOTM) and Lit Life Presentations:
      • The December 2nd TOTM presentation at Wallace for pre-k and k parents was attended by about 40 parents, which included 30 parents who were new to the district and 10 families that are already enrolled in pre-k and k.
      • Lit Life is the curriculum for 1st grade. Ms. Peters will help us pick a date for a presentation with Jennifer Lopez, who organizes Lit Life’s training. This is a follow-up item for January.
    • Spanish: We still don’t have a start date for the new schedule and there is some question as to whether there will be an entirely new teacher, or if we will still be doing the swap with Wallace. Once Ms. Vega has the new schedule and teacher information the parents will. This is a follow-up item for January.
  • Financial update: Treasurer Kathleen Keilman gave an update on the PTO’s finances. No change from last month in the account. There will be expenses for the raffle and holiday party. Kathleen generated three forms — one for vendor checks, one for reimbursement of out of pocket expenses, and one, a cash receipt for putting money into the account — and is now requesting these to streamline the movement of money in and out of the account. Sarah will put these on the blog, until then they can be requested from Sarah, Jill or Kathleen.
  • December 15th Board of Education Meeting – these are all follow-up items for January (Jill):
    • All of the event proposal forms have been completed — including cost and curriculum specifics — and been approved by Ms. Vega and Ms. Peters. Ms. Vega will submit these for Board approval.
    • We are requesting $11,700 dollars. Ms. Vega spoke with the business manager, who suggested using overflow from the curriculum budget for our account line. This is managed by Ms. Peters, who found $10,600 for us. This should make getting approval for the remainder much easier.
    • We are hoping for strong attendance at this meeting, since it will be the meeting in which specifics about 1st grade are discussed and possibly voted on.
  • Buses: We have tentatively scheduled buses for all of our planned field trips. The Carnegie Kids trip is going to cost slightly more, because we will need a private bus or buses in order to take the entire kindergarten class at once. It was suggested that the enrichment committee talk to Carnegie Kids about spreading the trip over several days. We also have a bus held for a May/June event, should one arise.
  • Committee Updates:
    • Fundraising (Vanessa Falco):
      • A 50/50 rally that will raise money for enrichment activities for the kindergarten class has begun. Tickets have been dispersed and there will be several days of booth sales as well. The goal is to raise $2000, with $1000 going to the winner.
      • Tentative plans for further fundraising include a wine tasting and silent auction at Hudson Tea building with Sparrow Wine & Liquor, in February or March. Tickets between $30-$50.
    • Family Fun (Sarah Cavill):
      • The Holiday party will have games, crafts, dancing and snack. It will begin with a concert by the children, who are learning holiday songs from Mr. Scott. It will begin at 12:45 on December 18th. Volunteers are needed.
    • Enrichment (Emily Barere and Rosemarie Pullano):
      • In-school enrichment:
        • Music: A trombonist will speak to the children and play for them on December 21.st
        • Phys-ed: Devotion yoga has agreed to come to the school and do a yoga class with the children. She will cover all five classes individually, but spread it over two days. The owner would like a flyer in the children’s folder or a mention in the PTO newsletter. We will need Mr. Rusack’s approval for this.
      • Green Initiatives:
        • Rosemarie and Emily spoke about the ‘Green Initiatives’ service project that the enrichment committee has developed for the children. In developing this project the committee sought to create an initiative that included responsibility, charity, stewardship and social awareness. The project will be age appropriate and something the children can empathize with and understand. There are many tie-ins through the curriculum; it’s hands on and the kids will be able to see the results. It is also a subject the teachers can discuss easily.
        • The enrichment committee will be making a calendar of events with descriptions of each activity and presenting it to the teachers.
  • The next PTO meeting is January 11th, 7-9pm

Brandt PTO Meeting Minutes 11/9

  • Attendees signed in, providing all contact information. There were approximately 10 parents in attendance, as well as Jessica Peters.
  • Follow-up Items:
    • The rooftop playground: It’s up. The tiles around it are being re-cut to create a tighter seal and after that it will be up and ready to use.
    • 1st grade: Assistant Superintendent Rusak has been hesitant to confirm anything, although it is believed that a decision will be made in January. The next steps discussed in our attempts to secure 1st grade at Brandt are:
      • Write a letter to Ms. Vega, explaining Brandt’s achievements, the parents’ passion for the school and a citing of the original letter about the kindergarten program, that assured parents that a grade would be added each year. It was agreed that the PTO would ask Kerry Ruben to take the lead on this letter. Ms. Vega will pass this letter on to Mr. Rusak.
      • Make the securing of 1st grade a primary task for the School Leadership Committee (SLC).
      • Have a parent or parents from the PTO attend the Board of Education (BOE) meetings to stay informed on any conversations about placements for 2010/11.
      • Pursue individual specials teachers and a gifted and talented program, if 1st grade is secured.
    • Bike rack: It is still on order without a firm delivery date.
    • Tools of the Mind (TOTM) Presentation:
      • TOTM will be doing a presentation on December 2 at Wallace for pre-k and k parents. This is an excellent opportunity for parents that still have questions about the curriculum to learn more.
      • The curriculum for 1st grade is called Lit Life and there was interest in having a presentation about it in February or March.
      • Class parents will distribute to their classes an explanation of what the “initials,” called scaffolded writing assessments by TOTM, mean on the children’s center plans.
    • Spanish: Beginning in January the specials schedule will change to include two Spanish periods, one will still be taught by Ms. Vega and one will be taught by a Spanish teacher from Wallace. There will be one less art under the new schedule. The children will still have two gym periods and one music period. When the start dates for this new schedule are official, parents will receive more detailed information.
    • Visiting kids in the classroom: The class parents will discuss with their teachers one day a month that parents can visit the classroom either at pick up or drop off.
    • Dawn Zimmer visit: The children made a thank you banner with their handprints, for Mayor Zimmer.
  • Event Proposal Form: There is a new form that needs to be filled out by committee members if they have an idea for an event, assembly, party, field trip, etc. Contact Sarah, at sarahcavill@gmail.com, if you would like a copy of the form, although all committee chairs should have them as well. This form is to help keep Jill and Sarah organized and aware of what events are coming up and/or awaiting approval.
  • Financial update: Treasurer Kathleen Keilman gave an update on the PTO’s finances. The Lilly’s fundraiser netted $453 after the tickets were purchased. The Election Day bake sale netted $606, leaving the PTO with $1059 in the bank.
  • PTO calendar: Jill has completed the PTO calendar through June 2010. While many dates and approvals are still pending confirmation or approval, the PTO is confident that most initiatives and activities are in place.
  • Committee Updates:
    • Fundraising (Aaron Barere):
      • The bake sale was the primary initiative for the fall and future planning was put on hold while that was completed. The committee anticipates having a fundraising activity or event around the holidays, Valentine’s Day, and one large stand-alone event.
      • At this time there is no specific fundraising goal set, but this will change after the PTO knows how much money the BOE has approved. Ms. Vega will submit some funding requests for Brandt to be considered at the December 15th BOE meeting. Ms. Peters indicated that the budget for the district will close in February; so all requests should be submitted by then.
    • Family Fun (Sarah Cavill):
      • The Halloween party was very successful.
      • The Holiday party will be December 18th, from 1-2:30 and will follow the same model at the Halloween party with games, craft and food centers.
      • Other activities tentatively planned for the year include a pajama day and movie night in February, a game night or dance in March, an Earth Day celebration in April and a block party/end of year celebration on June 4th.
    • Class Parents (Joy Wilson):
      • The class parents looked into caroling at a nursing home, but decided to collaborate with Mr. Scott on a mini holiday concert that the children will put on at the holiday party. Each class will learn one song.
    • Enrichment (Emily Barere and Rosemarie Pullano):
      • The committee arranged for Mad Science to come in Nov. 17th and put on an assembly for the children, with the intention of having the program begin as an after-school enrichment activity in January. Brandt is one of the few schools in the district without science, so we are hoping that the BOE will agree to fund Mad Science, otherwise it is $105 for 8 classes per student. There was discussion of scholarships for families with financial hardships that already receive assistance from the school. Daphne Anshel and Ms. Peters discussed how to do this privately and respectfully.
      • The committee also hopes to bring in professionals that are either parents of students or from outside the school, to enhance the children’s specials. For instance, a guitarist would come to the music class and play for them and explain what she does, how and why. They are looking for volunteers.
      • The committee has arranged to collaborate with HOPES to collect food for Thanksgiving baskets, as well as gently used and new clothing throughout the year. HOPES will pick up these items from the cafeteria. The children decorated boxes with their classmates for the food collection.
      • The committee has many things planned for the year including a visit to Carnegie Hall for a Carnegie Kids performance on Jan. 28th. This will cost $630 and will be one of the items submitted to Ms. Vega for the BOE meeting.
      • The committee will spearhead a service initiative in January. This is a follow-up agenda item for the next PTO meeting.
    • Crayon Recycling: The Mile Square office will be collecting broken crayons on behalf of the Hudson County Improvement Authority, who will turn them into ‘new crazy-colored crayons’ for the school.
    • Halloween Pictures: Pending clearance, the Halloween pictures will be displayed on the PTO board in the cafeteria.
    • The next PTO meeting is December 7th, 7-9pm.

PTO Info

Hello Parents!

The PTO has been very busy since our last newsletter and we have Brandt’s wonderful parents to thank for the success of these events!

Your generosity allowed the children a wonderful opportunity to see Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse at The Monroe Center, which we hope they all enjoyed. We look forward to providing other enriching opportunities for our students.

The children were fortunate to attend an assembly with Mayor Dawn Zimmer, who took questions from the students and talked about what children can do to keep Hoboken a great place to live. We want the children to be engaged in their community and we will have other service and charitable initiatives throughout the year to encourage this.

The Halloween party was a great success. The children freeze danced, ring tossed and cupcaked their hearts out!

The Election Day bake sale fundraiser was another successful endeavor, with a lot of money raised and calories consumed.

Thanks to all who gave money, volunteered, baked, supported or otherwise contributed. The PTO couldn’t do it without you.

Upcoming Events

The HOPES-PTO service initiatives:
The Hoboken Fire Department has generously donated 40 Thanksgiving turkeys for baskets that HOPES will gift to their families most in need. Many of these families are part of our Brandt school community. Please help complete the meal by bringing in non-perishable sides, including canned veggies, cranberries, and gravy as well as boxed potatoes and stuffing. There will be boxes by the sign-in desks in the cafeteria from Monday, November 16th through Friday, November 20th. We have one week to collect as much as possible, so please give what you can.

We will also be putting a large box in the cafeteria permanently, to collect gently used and new clothes all year long. HOPES will collect and distribute these items. The PTO’s Enrichment Committee has put together a list of books to help parents talk to their children about giving and charity.

Raising Charitable Children, by Carol Weisman
The Giving Book: Open The Door To A Lifetime Of Giving, by Ellen Sabin
The Berenstain Bears Think of Those in Need, by Stan and Jan Berenstain

Mad Science:
For all our little Einsteins! On November 17th, Mad Science will be presenting to the students a preview of what it will offer to Brandt as an after school science enrichment program. We hope to make this available in January 2010, and will follow up soon with other dates and enrollment fees. Please go to www.madscience.org for more information.

The next PTO meeting will be on December 7th, from 7-9 pm in the cafeteria. All are encouraged to attend.

Election Day Bake Sale

Hello fellow PTO members!

I’m Diana Whittles. My son Patrick is in classroom 307, Ms. Tregenza’s class. I’m on the Family Fun Committee as well as the Fundraising Committee.

I would like to fill all of you in on the specifics of the PTO's Election Day bake sale, as well some guidelines on what to bake and how to volunteer.

Brandt is a popular polling place, so we will have tables set up for the entire day, November 3rd, from 6 am-8 pm. In the morning there will be breakfast-y baked goods: muffins, croissants, pastries, coffee and tea. In the afternoon and evening we will be offering the more traditional bake sale items: cakes, cookies, cupcakes, brownies, tea and hot chocolate.

We are counting on all of our tireless, super generous parents (both PTO and non-PTO) to help us make this bake sale the roaring success I know that it can be.

If you have an item that you do better than anyone else or a regional or ethnic baked good or sweet that you would be willing to make, we would love to include it on our table! Of course, you don’t have to bake if you don’t want to — store-bought treats are welcome as well. If the item you want to make is spoken for, please come and talk to me.

On Tuesday morning, October 27th, we are going to have a table set up like the one we had for the Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse fundraising, where you can sign-up to bake, sell or provide supplies. We will also have a small bucket on the off-chance folks want to donate cash rather than bake or donate supplies. When signing up for an item, please be as specific as you can: “Cookies” should be “chocolate chip cookies” and “cupcakes” should be “yellow cupcakes with chocolate icing.” I’d also ask that you legibly print your name and classroom number down so if I need to find you I can.

Feel free to email me with what you are making or bringing and I will add you to my list.

I would ask the classroom mothers to gently guide your fellow class parents to the table on Tuesday and if anyone has any questions point them in my direction.

BAKE SALE GUIDELINES:

Our sale is TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 3rd at Brandt School. We are asking everyone to please drop off supplies, and all baked goods to the school on MONDAY, NOVEMBER 2nd between 2-4 pm.

While our children are off school that week the school will be open.

We will be stationed in the cafeteria.

Our bake sale is going to run from the time the polls open till they close, so it’s important that we have plenty of items.

IF YOU ARE BAKING:

  • Please don’t cut or slice any of the brownies or cakes or pies. We will take care of that for you.
  • Please include a little note with the name of what you’ve made and a little description about it so we can make a sign for the sale. If it has unusual ingredients let us know! That can often be a wonderful selling point.
  • Please keep everything nut free.
  • If you want your dish, plate or containers or other loaned supplies returned to you, please let us know.

IF YOU ARE ASSISTING WITH THE SALES THE DAY OF:
  • You are welcome to bring your children with you but please let us know in advance. We will have a small area set up for them with art supplies and books and just want to be sure we have enough items for everyone.
  • We are looking to have 4 people per shift and each shift will last 2 hours. If you are able to work longer than 2 hours please let us know.
  • The polls are open from 6:00am to 8:00pm.
  • Shifts are first come first choice.

Again thank you so very much for your help and support with this sale.

We couldn’t do it without you!

If you have any questions, concerns or need more information please feel free to contact Diana Whittles either by email: Vittin@optonline.net or by phone (201)683-7581.
